Correspondence, court papers, and financial records relating to McGilvra's roles as United States attorney for Washington Territory, member of the territorial legislature, and activist for municipal improvement and civic reform in Seattle, 1861-1926. Includes material on his legal battle with the Northern Pacific Railroad and on civic matters such as the Lake Washington Ship Canal, Cedar River water line, and Republican politics. Major correspondents include Caroline McGilvra Burke, George Goss, and Oliver McGilvra. The collection also includes estate papers and papers of his wife, Elizabeth M. John J. McGilvra, a lawyer, businessman, politician, and Seattle pioneer, began his law career in Chicago, where he became friends with Abraham Lincoln. In 1861, Lincoln appointed him U.S. attorney for Washington Territory, at which time he relocated with his family to the Pacific Northwest.
